| 値 | 秦佐八郎は，島根県出身で現在の岡山大学医学部で学んだ医師である。その名は，1910年留学先 のドイツで，世界的な科学者エールリッヒとともに，梅毒の特効薬サルバルサンを開発したことで 歴史に刻まれている。しかし，秦が本格的な研究生活を始めてから留学まで，実は主に「ペスト」 の研究に従事していたことは，今では知る人も少なくなっているように思う。 今回，私は『秦佐八郎論説集』を手に入れた。本稿では，この書籍の中から，特にドイツ留学ま での８年ほどの期間で，秦がかかわったペスト研究に焦点を当て，彼の研究資料の一部や言葉を紹 介する。具体的には，エールリッヒとの出会いや秦佐八郎の生い立ちなどに触れた後，書籍から「演 説「ペスト」細菌学部門」，「和歌山県湯浅町「ペスト」流行報告」，「和歌山県湯浅町ニ於テ行ヘル 「ペスト」予防接種ニ就テ」を取り上げる。ゆうに100年以上の時を経たが，コロナ禍の今なお一層， 岡山にゆかりの深い偉人としての秦の存在やその言葉には新たな価値があるように思われる。 |

| 値 | Dr. Sahachiro Hata is known as a co-developer of“Salvarsan”, the first effective medicine for syphilis. It was developed in the laboratory of Paul Ehrlich, in Frankfurt, Germany, who had already established a reputation as an expert scientist before this historic achievement took place. From 1910, when the medicine, or the first‘magic bullet’, was first dispensed to the patients, it continued to save many lives until penicillin came to be in clinical use in the 1940s. Hata was born in Shimane Prefecture in 1873. He completed his medical education at Faculty of Medicine, The Third Higher School (now Okayama University School of Medicine), and then worked as an assistant at Okayama Prefectural Hospital. In 1898 he started studying under Shibasaburo Kitasato, a bacteriologist famous for the discovery of bacillus pestis (plague bacterium), and soon he engaged himself in the study of the plague and continued it until he went abroad to Germany. It was the time when the disease had for the first time begun to be confirmed in some places in Japan and effective measures and treatment were needed. I have recently obtained a book titled『 秦 佐 八 郎 論 説 集 』, a collection of Hata’s writings.His earlier writings have not been as well known to us as his later ones, and here I show the contents of some of them, especially the earlier ones concerned with the plague, in the hope that they will help us to see Hata’s relationship to Ehrlich in a new light. At present we are facing the difficulties brought about by the Covid-19, and such a predicament can be the right occasion to reconsider Hata, a figure who dedicated his whole life to, and contributed to making a breakthrough in, medical science. |
