| 値 | 名探偵シャーロック・ホームズを創作したコナン・ドイル (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) は，エディンバラ大学医学部出身の医師だったというのは比較的知られているだろう。卒業から間もない頃，雌伏して医師としての雄飛を待つドイルは，診療所で観察された症例報告を医学誌に寄稿している。作家として名を成した後も，ある事件について，かの探偵を思わせる口ぶりで質問状を投稿している。また，医学に対する考えを表明した講演内容が掲載されたこともあった。これらの書簡（correspondence）と学会抄録（conference abstract）は，現代においても，一般に最もよく知られ，最も権威あるイギリスの『ランセット』（The Lancet）に掲載されている。 本稿では，ドイルの『ランセット』への投稿を，彼の手紙やホームズ作品などを交えながら，紹介する。折しも2023年は，『ランセット』の創刊200周年に当たる。一流の雑誌の長い歴史の１ページに刻まれた，コナン・ドイルの投稿はどのようなもので，その背景には何があるのか。希代のストーリーテラーだったドイルの人生を垣間見ながら，医師としての側面に光を当て，来し方に思いを馳せる機会になればと思う。 |

| 値 | Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the famous detective novel Sherlock Holmes, was a physician from the University of Edinburgh Medical School. Shortly after graduation, Doyle contributed correspondence articles on some clinical cases to The Lancet, which is one of the most prestigious medical journals to date. After gaining popularity as a writer, he submitted a question about a criminal case in a manner similar to that of the detective. Furthermore, a conference abstract describing his thoughts on medicine was published in the same journal. Notably, 2023 marks the 200th anniversary of the first issue of The Lancet. This article presents Doyle’s papers published in The Lancet, along with citations to his letters and works related to Sherlock Holmes.“What were Conan Doyle’s papers, and what was their background?”will be addressed in this article. Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to reflect on his life and career as a physician. |
